How It Works

Ethereum uses a system of denominations to represent different magnitudes of its native currency. The smallest unit is wei, and the most commonly used unit is ether (ETH). Just as 1 dollar equals 100 cents, 1 ether equals 10¹⁸ wei.

Why Different Units?

Wei — Named after Wei Dai, a cryptography pioneer. Used for exact computation in smart contracts where fractional values are not allowed.
Gwei — The standard unit for gas prices. A typical transaction might cost 20–100 gwei per unit of gas.
Ether — The main user-facing unit. Balances, transfers, and exchange prices are quoted in ether.
